Ok, so we admit to really liking ESRI’s idea of story maps. After all maps are really spatial indexes of geo-related data. Why not use a picture (that’s all a map really is) with easy to find linked information to help improve our understanding. That is an ESRI story. They can be many and varied.
We’ve be playing with the concept. A nice real world situation arose recently. We were asked how we might map MS Exchange Contact Data. So we took one of the ESRI story map templates and built this:
Here are the developers comments:
“I’m using Outlook 2010, but it’s all still Exchange. I created a couple fake contacts, filled in info such as address, websites, etc. Then exported that group of contacts as a csv and began working with it. Your contacts obviously have alot more info, but this still shows the concept. ArcGIS online does not allow table linking at this point so I did actually have to hard join in Arcmap before importing into Arcgis online, but if we did it on our own AGS instance we could keep it soft linked and much more dynamic to support continued updates. The demo was very easily & quickly developed =)”
