We have been very interested by work done by a British based company what3words around addressing. We have historically relied on either lat/long (a long series of numbers) or local addressing systems to locate something or somebody. This approach has its challenges. Lat/long is hard to convey accurately. Local addressing systems can have gaps and repetition. Many locations have no address. What3words have broken the world into 3m squares and provide a 3 word address for each square. As an example raider.unites.ship, is a location in Utah in the US.
Bringing together mapping and GIS technology with what3words makes much sense. At WebMapSolutions we have been offline enabling the excellent configurable map viewer (CMV). That means we can view and interact with maps on mobile devices with no or poor Internet connectivity. We have added a what3words widget to the application. This uses basemaps stored on the mobile device in combination with what3words to discover and view map locations. The demo below shows the what3words widget in action:
