There is a natural synergy between Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Building Information Model (BIM). On the one hand we have a technology centred on objects on the earths surface, and the relationships between these objects. On the other we have 3D models which provide architects, engineers, and planners the tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure. Combined these technologies bring us ever closer to a digital representation of the real world, to visualize, manage and analyse.
Working with a partner, we have been developing a GIS BIM platform built entirely on open source technology. Slated for initial release in Q2 2018, this is a revolutionary new platform. It not only integrates GIS and BIM data, but also includes IoT, regular text and video streams. It’s a complete platform solution for smart cities and smart communities.
In terms of completeness and performance, the platform is several steps ahead of other GIS BIM integrations. It provides the foundation for complex analysis involving GIS, BIM, IoT and video streams. We have been building focused web apps leveraging the platform which are responsive and have been optimized for use on any device: smartphone, tablet, laptop and desktop computer. Unlike a number of the proprietary desktop GIS applications which simply show the 3D outline of buildings, our solution is a full GIS BIM integration.
We will be sharing plenty more on our exciting new GIS BIM integration in the near future, as we move towards our initial release. As they say ‘watch this space’.
