We arrived at ‘the WHERE’ on a chairlift. Matt and I. Nearly 2 years ago. It took 5 minutes. Brilliant minds. Well naturally (!). We’ve been writing about ‘the WHERE’ in our blog regularly since that ‘light bulb’ moment. We even came up with a slogan describing what has become our core company focus:
From WHERE to THERE.
A rather clever play on words we still think.
After the announcements made last week – refer to our blog if you are living under a rock and do not know what I am talking about – you will be hearing considerably more about ‘the WHERE’.
GIS arriving at the Where
Let me change tack for a second. Did you see Sir Ken Robinson’s first TED Talk? Its focused on education and a must watch. I was struck by many things in his talk, but one thing stood out. Let me quote him:
“Creativity is the process of having original ideas that have value. These often come about from the interaction of different disciplinary ways of seeing things”
Our chairlift moment was neither brilliant, nor earth shattering. It was two GIS trained blokes who have long recognised GIS is changing. We started there, and allowed our combined creativity (based on a different different ‘disciplinary’ way of seeing things) help us to arrive at a new place. To acknowledge that GIS based tasks all start with a question, and that question centre’s on ‘the WHERE’.
But ‘the WHERE’ means nothing on its own. We did not just make ‘the WHERE’ our company focus, we fundamentally changed our company around that new focus. Without that change, as Frank Zappa famously said, we knew ‘the WHERE’ would end up being just another (bunch of) words.
