We take a clearly defined, systematic approach to implementing GIS solutions. Let me in this post share with you a common customer scenario, and walk through our solutions path.

Customer Project Background

Let’s start with a customer project requirements document. In this case the customer has a mix of data in an enterprise GIS database, and non-GIS hosted data. They have the following core needs:

1) Solutions for non-GIS staff – How to provide the ability for staff across the organization to view and interact with the data using web apps.

2) Evaluate mobile ArcGIS options – Both existing apps, and custom web apps.

3) How to edit GIS data – simple ways to provide editing tools for field and office based staff

4) Combining existing GIS technology (ArcGIS Server) with new (ArcGIS Online).

So this is an organization which currently uses GIS. When we read this core requirements list our first question is:

What is the problem the organization is trying to solve?

One might suggest in this case the core need is to provide access to GIS data across the organization through focused web applications.



WebMapSolutions GIS Solutions Path

A – Planning: Crucial to any and all successful GIS solutions. This phase is made up of discussion, understanding, and evaluation. The goal is knowledge sharing and a project blue print.

B – Data: In part this phase is to avoid “Garbage in, garbage out”, but it is also focused on building a centralized trusted data source. This phase is all about assessment, finding gaps, fixing issues, centralisation. The end goal is to put in place a system of record or (single source) of organizational authoritative data.

C – Platform: GIS is moving from separate pieces to a single, connected platform. The ArcGIS platform is one example. This represents a big change for many organizations. A change which potentially brings big benefits. For this customer this phase is made up of education, assessment, set up and configuration. There are some important decisions to be made in this stage. As an esri partner we provide important advice on options and potential paths. Final discussions, and pricing options involve direct conversations with esri. We then train staff on use of the platform, and help set up and configure.

D – Development: Taking an incremental/iterative approach our development team work closely with customers: Key to the development flow is prototype, configure/develop, implement, hand-over, support, enhance. The ArcGIS platform comes with many free maps and apps. These are configurable applications. We start the development phase assessing and discussing with customers these options. We try to leverage as many of the free maps and apps from esri as make sense to customers based on requirements. Next we consider custom applications. Esri have launched a number of application builders which provide quick and easy ways to build more custom solutions. As a company one of our key areas of focus is to provide maximum flexibility when it comes to web applications. Our mission is to provide GIS applications which run anywhere, anytime, on any device. Our disconnected configurable map viewer provides the next level of flexibility, using a widgets based model to provide focused functionality.

There you have it. GIS is complex. We’ve tried to simplify upgrading or adopting GIS technology. Taking a systematic 4 part approach helps to simplify the process resulting in successful customer solutions.
